Day 10 & 11 – May 13 & 14, 2013 – St. Mere Eglise and a quiet day

I haven’t been feeling well the last few days, so I really don’t have much energy so I have combined posts for the past two days into one.

On Monday despite feeling crappy (me not Peter), we headed out St. Mere Eglise.  It’s a little town that was part of the American D-Day landings, as it’s near Utah Beach.  In the centre of town, there is a church and on the west side of the church you will see a parachutist hung up on church roof.   During the landings an American parachutist had made his jump, but accidently got his parachute caught on a peak and was shot and decided it was best to play dead.  Unfortunately he ended up being captured by the Germans, but survived the war. (I couldn't grab a picture as it was raining, but trust me there is a mannequin with a parachute)

St. Mere Eglise was also used in filming Saving Private Ryan.  We visited the museum dedicated to the 1st Airborne Div.  It was a small museum with many belongings from the various members of the Division.  There were stories of individual men and in some cases even the stories of what happened to them after the war.

On the way back we visited the ruins of the Abby of Hambye… and met a few cows along the way…lol….

On Tuesday, I decided that I needed drugs to take care of how I was feeling.  So we set out to find a pharmacy, but sadly we arrived in Coutances at lunch time so the pharmacies were all closed until 2 pm.  What else could we do then, but find somewhere for lunch.  Peter chose Oncle Scott’s…it was an experience…picture the French’s interpretation on a Western…there were wagon wheels and cowboy hats and old country music blaring…t’was an experience to say the least….

Peter ordered Smocked Ribs…yup smocked not smoked…I ordered the Canadian fish…it was their interpretation on fish and chips…the menu even explained the fish was caught on small boats with 2-3 fishermen on Canada’s lakes… the fish was alright but the batter was not right…oh well… the menu was sort of like someone wanted to do American food but then changed the flavours and ingredients for the French pallet…the results are odd…you can get horse steaks (yuk), Australian Kangaroo, frogs legs and Cajun “pain au viande”…ummm their version of meat loaf…shudder...all in all it is an odd experience but they did serve Pepsi, Budweiser and Coronas which they are probably the only place serving these…

Now I know you are probably asking why I’d try the fish but I have been reacting to everything I eat…I suspect pork fat is used as a fat or oil cooking anything… as a result eating hasn’t been as much fun and the fish were fried in vegetable oil…I have since found when doing groceries despite the label stating beef or lamb or chicken, I have found they use pork fat in all sorts of things…I seemed to have booked our holiday in an area known for lots and lots of pork…at restaurants almost every dish has pork, lardons (bacon) or ham and so it doesn’t leave me much to order…

After lunch, we located a pharmacy and went to pick up some Tylenol and sinus medication…except…they don’t sell either here…Houston we have a problem…so after a trying time explaining to the pharmacist what I was looking for and what my symptoms are I left with something that was to deal with the fever and something else for the congestion…a powder to mix into cold or hot water…I have no idea what either were as I couldn’t recognize the medicinal ingredients … all I could hope was that I wouldn’t react to any of it…I tried explaining my allergies to the pharmacist but she didn’t seem to recognize any of the drug names…and I couldn’t get any cough syrup…they don’t sell it…sigh…

Anyways, I took my purchases home and decided to give in and give the stuff a try… and crawled into bed to nap…By this point I was resigning myself to the fact I should have packed a medicine cabinet, but I had assumed that I could pickup anything I might need…now I am just hoping to avoid trying out the French medical system…although I am pretty sure I have bronchitis…boo hiss…

Bonne nuit!
